Childcare worker pay in Michigan after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median childcare worker in Michigan earned $29,290 a year in May 2024, which is $14 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 14,760 childcare workers the BLS counts in Michigan earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $27,020 and $33,700. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Michigan's tax, and Michigan has a flat 4.25% state income tax.

What the median childcare worker keeps in Michigan

For a single filer on the median $29,290, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$29,290$2,441
Federal income tax-$1,531-$128
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$2,241-$187
Michigan state income tax-$1,245-$104
Take-home$24,273$2,023

The state line is 4.3% of gross at this salary. Detroit and some cities add a local income tax, which is not in the table. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Michigan ranks for childcare worker pay

Of the 50 states, Michigan ranks 29 of 50 on the gross median for childcare workers. The highest-paying state is Massachusetts at $39,290 and the lowest is Mississippi at $21,760. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Michigan$29,290$1,245$24,273
Indiana$29,340$880$24,678
Wisconsin$29,670$1,589$24,235
Ohio$28,230$692$23,974

Indiana leaves a childcare worker with more at the end of the year than Michigan does. Wisconsin and Ohio pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the childcare worker jobs are in Michigan

The BLS count of 14,760 childcare workers is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Detroit, Grand Rapids, Warren, Ann Arbor and Lansing, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($33,700 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Michigan openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about childcare worker pay in Michigan

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Michigan is $15 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($14) is what the typical childcare worker makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $29,290 offer in Michigan is $24,273 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $25,518.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $27,290 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $32,290 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Detroit pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
