Forklift operator in California: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

California does not license forklift operators: no state licence; OSHA requires employer-specific training and evaluation. This page says what a forklift operator licensed or working in another state has to do to work in California, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

There is no forklift licence to transfer: OSHA requires the employer to train and evaluate each operator on its own equipment, so every new job in California starts with a short certification regardless of your record. A prior certificate shortens the training and proves experience.

What to have ready before you move

• Prior forklift certification cards
• A list of equipment types (sit-down, reach, order picker)

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no California licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Paying for a 'national forklift licence' online; OSHA does not recognise one

Who hires forklift operators in California

Forklift operators in California are hired by warehouses, distribution centres, manufacturers and ports. The metros with the most of that work are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco and Sacramento. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the California openings page.

For the money side: the median forklift operator in California earned $48,720 a year ($23 an hour) in May 2024 across 103,090 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and California has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 13.3%. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.
