Farm pay in New York after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median farm worker in New York earned $39,370 a year in May 2024, which is $19 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 2,570 farm workers the BLS counts in New York earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $35,780 and $45,720. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on New York's tax, and New York has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 10.9%.
What the median farm worker keeps in New York
For a single filer on the median $39,370, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:
| Line | A year | A month |
|---|---|---|
| Gross pay (BLS median) | $39,370 | $3,281 |
| Federal income tax | -$2,740 | -$228 |
| Social Security and Medicare (7.65%) | -$3,012 | -$251 |
| New York state income tax | -$3,004 | -$250 |
| Take-home | $30,614 | $2,551 |
The state line is 7.6% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. New York City adds up to 3.876%, which is not in the table. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.
Where New York ranks for farm worker pay
Of the 50 states, New York ranks 7 of 50 on the gross median for farm workers, in the top ten. The highest-paying state is Wyoming at $44,760 and the lowest is Georgia at $28,990. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.
Across the border
The same job in the states next to New York, gross median and estimated take-home for a single filer:
| State | Gross median | State tax | Take-home |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York | $39,370 | $3,004 | $30,614 |
| Massachusetts | $40,370 | $2,019 | $32,403 |
| Pennsylvania | $36,940 | $1,134 | $30,531 |
| New Jersey | $37,580 | $2,828 | $29,351 |
| Connecticut | $36,180 | $1,770 | $29,284 |
| Vermont | $35,860 | $2,196 | $28,602 |
Massachusetts leaves a farm worker with more at the end of the year than New York does. Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut and Vermont pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.
Where the farm worker jobs are in New York
The BLS count of 2,570 farm workers is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, Syracuse and Albany, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($45,720 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the New York openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.
What people get wrong about farm worker pay in New York
- Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for New York is $20 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($19) is what the typical farm worker makes.
- Comparing gross across states. A $39,370 offer in New York is $30,614 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $33,618.
- Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $37,370 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $42,370 without it.
- Treating the statewide median as the metro median. New York City pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
