Occupational therapist pay in New Mexico after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median occupational therapist in New Mexico earned $99,220 a year in May 2024, which is $48 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 860 occupational therapists the BLS counts in New Mexico earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $81,220 and $125,340. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on New Mexico's tax, and New Mexico has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 5.9%.

What the median occupational therapist keeps in New Mexico

For a single filer on the median $99,220, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$99,220$8,268
Federal income tax-$13,669-$1,139
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$7,590-$633
New Mexico state income tax-$4,098-$342
Take-home$73,863$6,155

The state line is 4.1% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where New Mexico ranks for occupational therapist pay

Of the 50 states, New Mexico ranks 15 of 50 on the gross median for occupational therapists. The highest-paying state is California at $119,470 and the lowest is North Dakota at $79,910. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Colorado$103,970$4,575$76,727
Utah$93,310$4,199$69,604

Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona and Colorado leave an occupational therapist with more at the end of the year than New Mexico does; Texas by about $5,884. Utah pays less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the occupational therapist jobs are in New Mexico

The BLS count of 860 occupational therapists is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Rio Rancho and Santa Fe, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($125,340 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the New Mexico openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about occupational therapist pay in New Mexico

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for New Mexico is $49 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($48) is what the typical occupational therapist makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $99,220 offer in New Mexico is $73,863 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $77,961.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $97,220 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $102,220 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Albuquerque pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
