Sales pay in California after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median sales professional in California earned $73,920 a year in May 2024, which is $36 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 141,300 sales professionals the BLS counts in California earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $52,400 and $101,750. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on California's tax, and California has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 13.3%.

What the median sales professional keeps in California

For a single filer on the median $73,920, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$73,920$6,160
Federal income tax-$8,103-$675
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$5,655-$471
California state income tax-$6,882-$574
Take-home$53,280$4,440

The state line is 9.3% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Plus a 1.1% payroll tax for disability insurance, which is not in the table. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where California ranks for sales professional pay

Of the 50 states, California ranks 13 of 50 on the gross median for sales professionals. The highest-paying state is Washington at $79,190 and the lowest is Arkansas at $54,970. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Across the border

The same job in the states next to California, gross median and estimated take-home for a single filer:

StateGross medianState taxTake-home
California$73,920$6,882$53,280
Arizona$65,500$1,638$52,600
Oregon$67,210$4,658$50,783
Nevada$60,500$0$50,596

None of California's neighbours beats it on take-home for sales professionals. Arizona, Oregon and Nevada pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the sales professional jobs are in California

The BLS count of 141,300 sales professionals is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco and Sacramento, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($101,750 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the California openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about sales professional pay in California

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for California is $41 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($36) is what the typical sales professional makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $73,920 offer in California is $53,280 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $60,162.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $71,920 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $76,920 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Los Angeles pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
