How to transfer your Firefighter licence to North Carolina (2026)

Firefighter work in North Carolina is licensed at state level, by the North Carolina fire standards or firefighter certification board. This page says what a firefighter licensed or working in another state has to do to work in North Carolina, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Firefighter certification is state-issued but nearly every state accepts IFSAC or Pro Board accredited certificates for reciprocity, so a Firefighter I/II and HazMat Ops certificate from an accredited program transfers to North Carolina on application. EMT or paramedic certification transfers through NREMT. The hiring department runs its own academy on top.

Exam: IFSAC or Pro Board certification, accepted across states.

How long: two to eight weeks for certification reciprocity. Fee: $25 to $100; the current figure is on the licensing body's own site.

What to have ready before you move

  • IFSAC or Pro Board certificates
  • NREMT card
  • Training records

Start the paperwork before you give notice. Every week the licence is not done is a week you are not paid, and nothing in the process needs you to be in North Carolina already.

What people get wrong

  • Holding a state certificate that is not IFSAC or Pro Board accredited; it may not transfer
  • Underestimating the hiring timeline; departments hire in cycles

Who hires firefighters in North Carolina

Firefighters in North Carolina are hired by municipal and county fire departments, airport and industrial fire services and wildland agencies. The metros with the most of that work are Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Durham and Winston-Salem. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the North Carolina openings page.

For the money side: the median firefighter in North Carolina earned $37,250 a year ($18 an hour) in May 2024 across 18,200 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and North Carolina has a flat 4.25% state income tax. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.
