General contractor pay in Virginia after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median general contractor in Virginia earned $76,620 a year in May 2024, which is $37 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 24,170 general contractors the BLS counts in Virginia earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $61,500 and $93,800. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Virginia's tax, and Virginia has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 5.75%.

What the median general contractor keeps in Virginia

For a single filer on the median $76,620, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$76,620$6,385
Federal income tax-$8,697-$725
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$5,861-$488
Virginia state income tax-$3,084-$257
Take-home$58,978$4,915

The state line is 4.0% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Virginia ranks for general contractor pay

Of the 50 states, Virginia ranks 31 of 50 on the gross median for general contractors. The highest-paying state is New Jersey at $103,850 and the lowest is Arkansas at $62,200. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Virginia$76,620$3,084$58,978
West Virginia$80,360$2,711$61,981
Maryland$76,800$3,091$59,097
Tennessee$71,840$0$58,698
North Carolina$73,310$3,116$56,617
Kentucky$73,020$2,921$56,608

West Virginia and Maryland leave a general contractor with more at the end of the year than Virginia does; West Virginia by about $3,003. Tennessee, North Carolina and Kentucky pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the general contractor jobs are in Virginia

The BLS count of 24,170 general contractors is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Richmond and Arlington, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($93,800 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Virginia openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about general contractor pay in Virginia

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Virginia is $38 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($37) is what the typical general contractor makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $76,620 offer in Virginia is $58,978 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $62,062.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $74,620 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $79,620 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Virginia Beach pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
