Heavy equipment operator pay in Nebraska after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median heavy equipment operator in Nebraska earned $57,240 a year in May 2024, which is $28 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 3,180 heavy equipment operators the BLS counts in Nebraska earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $48,940 and $63,740. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Nebraska's tax, and Nebraska has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 5.2%.

What the median heavy equipment operator keeps in Nebraska

For a single filer on the median $57,240, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$57,240$4,770
Federal income tax-$4,885-$407
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$4,379-$365
Nebraska state income tax-$2,084-$174
Take-home$45,892$3,824

The state line is 3.6% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Nebraska ranks for heavy equipment operator pay

Of the 50 states, Nebraska ranks 30 of 50 on the gross median for heavy equipment operators. The highest-paying state is Hawaii at $105,440 and the lowest is Arkansas at $45,170. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

South Dakota$56,720$0$47,559
Kansas$50,600$1,976$40,665

Wyoming, Iowa, Colorado, Missouri and South Dakota leave a heavy equipment operator with more at the end of the year than Nebraska does; Wyoming by about $6,982. Kansas pays less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the heavy equipment operator jobs are in Nebraska

The BLS count of 3,180 heavy equipment operators is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Omaha, Lincoln, Bellevue and Grand Island, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($63,740 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Nebraska openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

Nebraska also has a program that pay people to move in: Free building lots (a residential lot at no cost, for people who build a home in participating small towns (Curtis, Beatrice and others)). Each has a residence condition and a funding round; the amount is the program's own "up to" figure.

What people get wrong about heavy equipment operator pay in Nebraska

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Nebraska is $28 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($28) is what the typical heavy equipment operator makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $57,240 offer in Nebraska is $45,892 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $47,976.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $55,240 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $60,240 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Omaha pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
