Lineman pay in Minnesota after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median lineman in Minnesota earned $104,800 a year in May 2024, which is $50 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 1,670 linemans the BLS counts in Minnesota earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $87,980 and $110,960. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Minnesota's tax, and Minnesota has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 9.85%.
What the median lineman keeps in Minnesota
For a single filer on the median $104,800, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:
| Line | A year | A month |
|---|---|---|
| Gross pay (BLS median) | $104,800 | $8,733 |
| Federal income tax | -$14,897 | -$1,241 |
| Social Security and Medicare (7.65%) | -$8,017 | -$668 |
| Minnesota state income tax | -$7,226 | -$602 |
| Take-home | $74,660 | $6,222 |
The state line is 6.9% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.
Where Minnesota ranks for lineman pay
Of the 50 states, Minnesota ranks 18 of 50 on the gross median for linemans. The highest-paying state is Washington at $125,710 and the lowest is Oklahoma at $66,840. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.
Across the border
The same job in the states next to Minnesota, gross median and estimated take-home for a single filer:
| State | Gross median | State tax | Take-home |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minnesota | $104,800 | $7,226 | $74,660 |
| Wisconsin | $104,420 | $5,592 | $76,027 |
| North Dakota | $97,460 | $1,706 | $75,016 |
| South Dakota | $92,060 | $0 | $72,923 |
| Iowa | $95,850 | $3,642 | $71,947 |
Wisconsin and North Dakota leave a lineman with more at the end of the year than Minnesota does. South Dakota and Iowa pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.
Where the lineman jobs are in Minnesota
The BLS count of 1,670 linemans is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rochester and Duluth, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($110,960 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Minnesota openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.
Minnesota also has a program that pay people to move in: Harmony new-home rebate ($5,000 to $12,000, for anyone building a new home in the city of Harmony). Each has a residence condition and a funding round; the amount is the program's own "up to" figure.
What people get wrong about lineman pay in Minnesota
- Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Minnesota is $48 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($50) is what the typical lineman makes.
- Comparing gross across states. A $104,800 offer in Minnesota is $74,660 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $81,886.
- Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $102,800 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $107,800 without it.
- Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Minneapolis pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
