Medical coder pay in Georgia after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median medical coder in Georgia earned $48,990 a year in May 2024, which is $24 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 5,280 medical coders the BLS counts in Georgia earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $39,780 and $62,750. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Georgia's tax, and Georgia has a flat 5.19% state income tax.

What the median medical coder keeps in Georgia

For a single filer on the median $48,990, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$48,990$4,083
Federal income tax-$3,895-$325
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$3,748-$312
Georgia state income tax-$2,543-$212
Take-home$38,804$3,234

The state line is 5.2% of gross at this salary. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Georgia ranks for medical coder pay

Of the 50 states, Georgia ranks 30 of 50 on the gross median for medical coders. The highest-paying state is Rhode Island at $63,330 and the lowest is Alabama at $38,540. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Georgia$48,990$2,543$38,804

North Carolina$47,840$2,033$38,390
Alabama$38,540$1,349$31,602

South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida leave a medical coder with more at the end of the year than Georgia does; South Carolina by about $7,654. North Carolina and Alabama pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the medical coder jobs are in Georgia

The BLS count of 5,280 medical coders is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus and Savannah, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($62,750 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Georgia openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about medical coder pay in Georgia

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Georgia is $26 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($24) is what the typical medical coder makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $48,990 offer in Georgia is $38,804 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $41,347.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $46,990 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $51,990 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Atlanta pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
