How to transfer your Police officer licence to Vermont (2026)

Police officer work in Vermont is licensed at state level, by the Vermont Peace Officer Standards and Training commission. This page says what a police officer licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Vermont, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Police certification is by state POST commission and most states offer an out-of-state officer a shortened route: a waiver or reciprocity academy of a few weeks and the state exam, rather than the full academy, provided your certification is current and you left your last agency in good standing. A few states require the full academy regardless. The hiring agency applies on your behalf after it hires you.

How long: the hiring process is months; the reciprocity academy is two to eight weeks. Fee: paid by the agency; the current figure is on the licensing body's own site.

What to have ready before you move

  • POST certificate and training record
  • Separation documentation from your last agency
  • Firearms qualification record

Start the paperwork before you give notice. Every week the licence is not done is a week you are not paid, and nothing in the process needs you to be in Vermont already.

What people get wrong

  • Letting certification lapse; most states cut the reciprocity route after three to five years out
  • Assuming the agency's pay is comparable; pensions and shift differentials differ more than base pay

Who hires police officers in Vermont

Police officers in Vermont are hired by municipal police, sheriff's offices, state police and university police. The metros with the most of that work are Burlington, South Burlington and Rutland. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Vermont openings page.

For the money side: the median police officer in Vermont earned $63,690 a year ($31 an hour) in May 2024 across 1,080 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Vermont has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 8.75%. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.

Vermont also has a program that pay people to move in: New Relocating Worker Grant (up to $7,500 for moving costs, for people who move to Vermont for a job with a Vermont employer; funded in rounds, closes when the money is gone). Each has a residence condition and a funding round.
