Real estate agent pay in New Jersey after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median real estate agent in New Jersey earned $66,680 a year in May 2024, which is $32 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 950 real estate agents the BLS counts in New Jersey earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $49,230 and $101,000. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on New Jersey's tax, and New Jersey has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 10.75%.

What the median real estate agent keeps in New Jersey

For a single filer on the median $66,680, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$66,680$5,557
Federal income tax-$6,511-$543
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$5,101-$425
New Jersey state income tax-$5,018-$418
Take-home$50,050$4,171

The state line is 7.5% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where New Jersey ranks for real estate agent pay

Of the 50 states, New Jersey ranks 7 of 50 on the gross median for real estate agents, in the top ten. The highest-paying state is New York at $97,440 and the lowest is Iowa at $36,420. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

New Jersey$66,680$5,018$50,050
New York$97,440$7,435$69,273
Pennsylvania$53,590$1,645$43,398
Delaware$48,450$2,238$38,676

New York leaves a real estate agent with more at the end of the year than New Jersey does; New York by about $19,223. Pennsylvania and Delaware pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the real estate agent jobs are in New Jersey

The BLS count of 950 real estate agents is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Newark, Jersey City, Paterson and Elizabeth, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($101,000 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the New Jersey openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about real estate agent pay in New Jersey

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for New Jersey is $38 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($32) is what the typical real estate agent makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $66,680 offer in New Jersey is $50,050 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $55,068.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $64,680 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $69,680 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Newark pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
