Roofer pay in Louisiana after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median roofer in Louisiana earned $45,680 a year in May 2024, which is $22 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 720 roofers the BLS counts in Louisiana earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $36,310 and $49,380. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Louisiana's tax, and Louisiana has a flat 3% state income tax.

What the median roofer keeps in Louisiana

For a single filer on the median $45,680, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$45,680$3,807
Federal income tax-$3,498-$292
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$3,495-$291
Louisiana state income tax-$1,370-$114
Take-home$37,317$3,110

The state line is 3.0% of gross at this salary. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Louisiana ranks for roofer pay

Of the 50 states, Louisiana ranks 42 of 50 on the gross median for roofers, in the bottom ten. The highest-paying state is Minnesota at $77,730 and the lowest is Wyoming at $38,650. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Louisiana$45,680$1,370$37,317
Texas$45,440$0$38,495
Arkansas$45,120$1,232$37,006
Mississippi$40,480$1,781$32,728

Texas leaves a roofer with more at the end of the year than Louisiana does. Arkansas and Mississippi pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the roofer jobs are in Louisiana

The BLS count of 720 roofers is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport and Lafayette, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($49,380 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Louisiana openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about roofer pay in Louisiana

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Louisiana is $23 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($22) is what the typical roofer makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $45,680 offer in Louisiana is $37,317 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $38,687.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $43,680 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $48,680 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. New Orleans pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
