Delivery driver in North Dakota: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

North Dakota does not license delivery drivers: no licence beyond a standard driver's licence; a clean record and a DOT medical card for larger vehicles. This page says what a delivery driver licensed or working in another state has to do to work in North Dakota, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

No special licence transfers because none is needed: a standard North Dakota driver's licence, swapped within the residency window, is all a delivery job asks for. Vehicles over 10,000 pounds need a DOT medical card, which is federal and carries over.

What to have ready before you move

• Driving record
• DOT medical card if you have one

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no North Dakota licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Missing the licence swap window
• Assuming pay structures are the same; per-package, hourly and route-contractor pay differ widely

What that leaves you after tax is its own page.
