Hotel staff in Minnesota: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Minnesota does not license hotel workers: no licence. This page says what a hotel worker licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Minnesota, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Nothing is licensed or transferred; hotel work in Minnesota is hired on experience, brand training (Marriott, Hilton systems) and availability.

What to have ready before you move

• Brand property system experience listed
• References

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Minnesota licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Assuming a brand transfer is automatic; franchises are separate employers

Who hires hotel workers in Minnesota

Hotel workers in Minnesota are hired by hotels, resorts, casinos and management companies. The metros with the most of that work are Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rochester and Duluth. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Minnesota openings page.

For the money side: the median hotel worker in Minnesota earned $35,990 a year ($17 an hour) in May 2024 across 4,660 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Minnesota has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 9.85%. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.

Minnesota also has a program that pay people to move in: Harmony new-home rebate ($5,000 to $12,000, for anyone building a new home in the city of Harmony). Each has a residence condition and a funding round.
