How to transfer your Pharmacy technician licence to Alaska (2026)

Pharmacy technician work in Alaska is licensed at state level, by the Alaska Board of Pharmacy. This page says what a pharmacy technician licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Alaska, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Most states register or license pharmacy technicians through the Board of Pharmacy, and a registration does not transfer: you apply to Alaska's board as a new technician with your national certificate, a background check and the fee. Some states require a state-approved training program as well; most accept the PTCB certificate in its place.

Exam: PTCB or ExCPT, accepted by most states.

How long: two to six weeks. Fee: $25 to $100; the current figure is on the licensing body's own site.

What to have ready before you move

  • Your PTCB or ExCPT certificate
  • Proof of training if your state required it
  • A clean background check; pharmacy boards are strict on drug offences

Start the paperwork before you give notice. Every week the licence is not done is a week you are not paid, and nothing in the process needs you to be in Alaska already.

What people get wrong

  • Assuming the registration transfers; it is per state
  • Letting the national certificate lapse; without it most boards will not register you

Who hires pharmacy technicians in Alaska

Pharmacy technicians in Alaska are hired by retail chains, hospital pharmacies, mail-order and long-term care pharmacies. The metros with the most of that work are Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Alaska openings page.

For the money side: the median pharmacy technician in Alaska earned $50,440 a year ($24 an hour) in May 2024 across 870 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Alaska has no state income tax on wages. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.

Alaska also has a program that pay people to move in: Permanent Fund Dividend (roughly $1,000 to $1,700 a year, for every resident after a full calendar year in the state; not a relocation grant, but paid every year). Each has a residence condition and a funding round.
