Registered nurse pay in Missouri after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median registered nurse in Missouri earned $79,770 a year in May 2024, which is $38 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 74,270 registered nurses the BLS counts in Missouri earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $66,830 and $92,710. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Missouri's tax, and Missouri has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 4.7%.

What the median registered nurse keeps in Missouri

For a single filer on the median $79,770, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$79,770$6,648
Federal income tax-$9,390-$783
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$6,102-$509
Missouri state income tax-$2,624-$219
Take-home$61,654$5,138

The state line is 3.3% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Kansas City and St. Louis add a 1% earnings tax, which is not in the table. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Missouri ranks for registered nurse pay

Of the 50 states, Missouri ranks 41 of 50 on the gross median for registered nurses, in the bottom ten. The highest-paying state is California at $140,330 and the lowest is South Dakota at $69,510. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Kentucky$79,910$3,196$61,180

Kansas$78,060$3,049$60,025
Iowa$76,960$2,924$59,377

Illinois, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Nebraska leave a registered nurse with more at the end of the year than Missouri does; Illinois by about $3,018. Kentucky, Arkansas, Kansas and Iowa pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the registered nurse jobs are in Missouri

The BLS count of 74,270 registered nurses is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield and Columbia, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($92,710 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Missouri openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about registered nurse pay in Missouri

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Missouri is $39 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($38) is what the typical registered nurse makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $79,770 offer in Missouri is $61,654 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $64,278.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $77,770 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $82,770 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Kansas City pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
