Security guard pay in Utah after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median security guard in Utah earned $42,440 a year in May 2024, which is $20 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 7,000 security guards the BLS counts in Utah earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $36,440 and $46,180. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Utah's tax, and Utah has a flat 4.5% state income tax.

What the median security guard keeps in Utah

For a single filer on the median $42,440, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$42,440$3,537
Federal income tax-$3,109-$259
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$3,247-$271
Utah state income tax-$1,910-$159
Take-home$34,174$2,848

The state line is 4.5% of gross at this salary. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Utah ranks for security guard pay

Of the 50 states, Utah ranks 12 of 50 on the gross median for security guards. The highest-paying state is Alaska at $48,620 and the lowest is Mississippi at $29,710. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Utah$42,440$1,910$34,174
Colorado$46,080$2,028$36,981
Nevada$38,340$0$32,790
Idaho$40,610$2,152$32,462
Arizona$38,560$964$32,003
New Mexico$38,650$1,596$31,443
Wyoming$36,330$0$31,175

Colorado leaves a security guard with more at the end of the year than Utah does. Nevada, Idaho, Arizona, New Mexico and Wyoming pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the security guard jobs are in Utah

The BLS count of 7,000 security guards is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Provo and St. George, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($46,180 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Utah openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about security guard pay in Utah

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Utah is $21 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($20) is what the typical security guard makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $42,440 offer in Utah is $34,174 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $36,084.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $40,440 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $45,440 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Salt Lake City pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
