Medical assistant pay in Oregon after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median medical assistant in Oregon earned $49,900 a year in May 2024, which is $24 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 11,610 medical assistants the BLS counts in Oregon earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $46,490 and $57,890. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Oregon's tax, and Oregon has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 9.9%.

What the median medical assistant keeps in Oregon

For a single filer on the median $49,900, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$49,900$4,158
Federal income tax-$4,004-$334
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$3,817-$318
Oregon state income tax-$3,458-$288
Take-home$38,621$3,218

The state line is 6.9% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Portland metro adds local taxes on higher incomes, which is not in the table. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Oregon ranks for medical assistant pay

Of the 50 states, Oregon ranks 3 of 50 on the gross median for medical assistants, in the top ten. The highest-paying state is Washington at $55,120 and the lowest is Mississippi at $34,800. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Oregon$49,900$3,458$38,621
Washington$55,120$0$46,273
Nevada$43,450$0$36,896
California$48,050$4,473$36,119
Idaho$43,400$2,300$34,556

Washington leaves a medical assistant with more at the end of the year than Oregon does; Washington by about $7,652. Nevada, California and Idaho pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the medical assistant jobs are in Oregon

The BLS count of 11,610 medical assistants is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Portland, Salem, Eugene and Bend, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($57,890 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Oregon openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about medical assistant pay in Oregon

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Oregon is $25 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($24) is what the typical medical assistant makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $49,900 offer in Oregon is $38,621 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $42,079.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $47,900 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $52,900 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Portland pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
