Roofer pay in Oregon after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median roofer in Oregon earned $56,320 a year in May 2024, which is $27 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 3,490 roofers the BLS counts in Oregon earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $47,530 and $63,010. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Oregon's tax, and Oregon has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 9.9%.

What the median roofer keeps in Oregon

For a single filer on the median $56,320, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$56,320$4,693
Federal income tax-$4,774-$398
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$4,308-$359
Oregon state income tax-$3,903-$325
Take-home$43,335$3,611

The state line is 6.9% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Portland metro adds local taxes on higher incomes, which is not in the table. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Oregon ranks for roofer pay

Of the 50 states, Oregon ranks 14 of 50 on the gross median for roofers. The highest-paying state is Minnesota at $77,730 and the lowest is Wyoming at $38,650. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

StateGross medianState taxTake-home
Oregon$56,320$3,903$43,335
Washington$60,330$0$50,459
California$63,040$5,869$46,638
Nevada$49,180$0$41,500
Idaho$48,140$2,551$38,113

Washington and California leave a roofer with more at the end of the year than Oregon does; Washington by about $7,124. Nevada and Idaho pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the roofer jobs are in Oregon

The BLS count of 3,490 roofers is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Portland, Salem, Eugene and Bend, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($63,010 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Oregon openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about roofer pay in Oregon

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Oregon is $28 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($27) is what the typical roofer makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $56,320 offer in Oregon is $43,335 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $47,238.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $54,320 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $59,320 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Portland pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
