Delivery driver in New Jersey: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

New Jersey does not license delivery drivers: no licence beyond a standard driver's licence; a clean record and a DOT medical card for larger vehicles. This page says what a delivery driver licensed or working in another state has to do to work in New Jersey, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

No special licence transfers because none is needed: a standard New Jersey driver's licence, swapped within the residency window, is all a delivery job asks for. Vehicles over 10,000 pounds need a DOT medical card, which is federal and carries over.

What to have ready before you move

• Driving record
• DOT medical card if you have one

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no New Jersey licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Missing the licence swap window
• Assuming pay structures are the same; per-package, hourly and route-contractor pay differ widely
