EMT pay in Georgia after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median EMT in Georgia earned $39,250 a year in May 2024, which is $19 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 5,740 EMTs the BLS counts in Georgia earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $35,290 and $45,930. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Georgia's tax, and Georgia has a flat 5.19% state income tax.

What the median EMT keeps in Georgia

For a single filer on the median $39,250, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$39,250$3,271
Federal income tax-$2,726-$227
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$3,003-$250
Georgia state income tax-$2,037-$170
Take-home$31,484$2,624

The state line is 5.2% of gross at this salary. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Georgia ranks for EMT pay

Of the 50 states, Georgia ranks 29 of 50 on the gross median for EMTs. The highest-paying state is Hawaii at $61,310 and the lowest is Arkansas at $31,710. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

StateGross medianState taxTake-home
Georgia$39,250$2,037$31,484
Florida$40,420$0$34,462
North Carolina$40,530$1,723$32,826
Tennessee$37,630$0$32,219
South Carolina$38,670$1,678$31,378
Alabama$36,260$1,269$29,850

Florida, North Carolina and Tennessee leave an EMT with more at the end of the year than Georgia does. South Carolina and Alabama pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the EMT jobs are in Georgia

The BLS count of 5,740 EMTs is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus and Savannah, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($45,930 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Georgia openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about EMT pay in Georgia

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Georgia is $20 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($19) is what the typical EMT makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $39,250 offer in Georgia is $31,484 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $33,521.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $37,250 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $42,250 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Atlanta pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
