EMT pay in New Jersey after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median EMT in New Jersey earned $49,500 a year in May 2024, which is $24 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 5,630 EMTs the BLS counts in New Jersey earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $45,900 and $56,760. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on New Jersey's tax, and New Jersey has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 10.75%.

What the median EMT keeps in New Jersey

For a single filer on the median $49,500, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$49,500$4,125
Federal income tax-$3,956-$330
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$3,787-$316
New Jersey state income tax-$3,725-$310
Take-home$38,032$3,169

The state line is 7.5% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where New Jersey ranks for EMT pay

Of the 50 states, New Jersey ranks 3 of 50 on the gross median for EMTs, in the top ten. The highest-paying state is Hawaii at $61,310 and the lowest is Arkansas at $31,710. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Across the border

The same job in the states next to New Jersey, gross median and estimated take-home for a single filer:

StateGross medianState taxTake-home
New Jersey$49,500$3,725$38,032
Delaware$45,310$2,093$36,298
New York$46,000$3,510$35,435
Pennsylvania$38,580$1,184$31,799

None of New Jersey's neighbours beats it on take-home for EMTs. Delaware, New York and Pennsylvania pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the EMT jobs are in New Jersey

The BLS count of 5,630 EMTs is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Newark, Jersey City, Paterson and Elizabeth, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($56,760 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the New Jersey openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about EMT pay in New Jersey

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for New Jersey is $25 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($24) is what the typical EMT makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $49,500 offer in New Jersey is $38,032 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $41,757.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $47,500 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $52,500 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Newark pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
