From Honduras to the U.S.: Legal Work Pathways Explained (2026)

Honduras depends on U.S. wages more than almost any country in the hemisphere - remittances have hovered around a quarter of GDP. What is less known is that legal seasonal channels for Hondurans have been deliberately expanded, and a worker with real agricultural experience has a better shot at a legal U.S. contract today than a decade ago.
Is Honduras on the H-2 eligible list?
Yes. Honduras appears on the DHS eligible-country list for both H-2A and H-2B, and Honduran nationals have been included in the supplemental H-2B set-asides reserved for Northern Central America. Allocations are set annually - confirm on the current DOL/DHS list - but Honduras has been a consistent participant.
Main pathways
H-2A agriculture
Hondurans with coffee, melon, banana and African-palm experience are recruited for U.S. harvests and nursery work. H-2A has no cap; employers provide free housing and pay the regional AEWR wage, typically around $14-$19 per hour gross. A 6-9 month contract can gross more than several years of Honduran farm wages - which is exactly why the fake-recruiter industry is so aggressive.
H-2B seasonal jobs and the set-aside
Landscaping, hospitality, construction labor and especially seafood processing - Honduran workers have an established presence in Gulf Coast crab and shrimp plants. The Central America set-aside gives Honduran applicants access to visas outside the general cap; our guide to H-2B seasonal jobs explains the timing.
Government-mediated recruitment
The Honduran Secretariat of Labor (STSS) operates a program connecting vetted workers with foreign employers. It is slower than a smuggler's promise and infinitely safer - registration is free and offers are screened.
Embassy interview notes - Tegucigalpa
Visa processing runs through the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa. H-2 groups are typically scheduled together by the employer's agent. Officers concentrate on three things: whether you actually have the claimed work experience, whether you paid illegal recruitment fees, and whether you understand the terms of your contract. Workers from San Pedro Sula, the north coast or the countryside should budget travel and a possible overnight stay in the capital. Bring consistent documents - discrepancies between your DS-160 and your answers are the most common avoidable problem.
Sectors where Hondurans work
- Crab picking and seafood processing in Maryland, North Carolina and the Gulf
- Fruit, vegetable and tobacco harvests in the Southeast
- Landscaping crews in Texas and the Atlantic states
- Poultry processing, where large permanent Honduran communities already exist
Community and remittances
Well over a million people of Honduran origin live in the U.S., concentrated in Houston, New Orleans, Miami, New York and Charlotte. Remittances - roughly $9-10 billion a year in recent years, around a quarter of GDP - are the country's largest source of foreign income, ahead of every export. That dependency cuts both ways: it shows how transformative legal wages are, and why desperate families are prime targets for fraud.
Honest caveats
Demand for these visas massively exceeds supply, and no one can guarantee you a slot - nobody legitimate charges workers for a job offer, and U.S. rules prohibit passing recruitment costs to workers. TPS for Hondurans is a separate, politically unstable protection status, not a recruitment channel; do not build plans on it. And overstaying a seasonal visa ends what could have been years of repeat contracts.
Preparing a case that survives scrutiny
Because Honduran applications face real skepticism, preparation is not paperwork theater - it decides outcomes. Collect work letters from fincas, packing plants or construction employers with names and phone numbers; officers do sometimes verify. Make sure your DS-160 matches your documents exactly - dates, employer names, even spelling. If a relative in the U.S. is undocumented, do not invent a story around it; answer what is asked, truthfully. And understand your contract before the interview: workers who can plainly state their wage, job duties and contract length in their own words read as genuine, while applicants who recite a memorized script trigger exactly the fraud instincts they hoped to avoid. Finally, plan finances for the gap between arrival and first paycheck - even with free H-2A housing, you need cash for food and a SIM card in week one.
