CNA pay in Utah after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median CNA in Utah earned $38,500 a year in May 2024, which is $19 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 12,350 CNAs the BLS counts in Utah earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $36,220 and $41,480. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Utah's tax, and Utah has a flat 4.5% state income tax.

What the median CNA keeps in Utah

For a single filer on the median $38,500, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$38,500$3,208
Federal income tax-$2,636-$220
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$2,945-$245
Utah state income tax-$1,733-$144
Take-home$31,186$2,599

The state line is 4.5% of gross at this salary. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Utah ranks for CNA pay

Of the 50 states, Utah ranks 30 of 50 on the gross median for CNAs. The highest-paying state is Oregon at $48,390 and the lowest is Louisiana at $30,240. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Across the border

The same job in the states next to Utah, gross median and estimated take-home for a single filer:

StateGross medianState taxTake-home
Utah$38,500$1,733$31,186
Nevada$45,060$0$38,190
Colorado$44,950$1,978$36,123
Arizona$41,980$1,050$34,665
Wyoming$38,360$0$32,806
New Mexico$37,030$1,529$30,208
Idaho$37,530$1,989$30,150

Nevada, Colorado, Arizona and Wyoming leave a CNA with more at the end of the year than Utah does; Nevada by about $7,004. New Mexico and Idaho pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the CNA jobs are in Utah

The BLS count of 12,350 CNAs is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Provo and St. George, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($41,480 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Utah openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about CNA pay in Utah

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Utah is $19 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($19) is what the typical CNA makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $38,500 offer in Utah is $31,186 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $32,919.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $36,500 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $41,500 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Salt Lake City pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
