H-2B Landscaping Jobs: The Biggest Seasonal Industry Explained (2026)

If you look at the list of jobs certified for the H-2B program each year, one industry towers over all the others: landscaping and groundskeeping. Year after year, landscaping accounts for roughly a third or more of all H-2B positions, far ahead of seafood processing, hospitality or construction. If you are a worker abroad thinking about a seasonal job in the United States, landscaping is statistically the door most likely to open.

Why landscaping dominates the H-2B program

The H-2B visa exists for temporary non-agricultural work, and landscaping fits the definition almost perfectly. In most of the US, the growing season runs from March or April to November. Lawns need mowing, hedges need trimming, irrigation systems need installing, and commercial properties need year-round curb appeal, but only while the grass actually grows. American landscaping companies struggle to find local workers willing to take a physically demanding job that disappears every winter, so they turn to the H-2B program in huge numbers.

What the work actually involves

Job titles vary, but most H-2B landscaping positions involve some mix of:

  • Mowing, edging and trimming on residential and commercial contracts
  • Planting trees, shrubs and seasonal flowers
  • Laying sod, mulch and decorative stone
  • Installing irrigation lines and hardscaping such as patios and retaining walls
  • Leaf removal and property clean-up in autumn

The work is outdoors in all weather, often starting early in the morning. Expect long days in summer, sometimes with paid overtime. Crews typically travel between job sites in company trucks, so a driving licence can make you more valuable, though it is rarely required.

Where the jobs are

Landscaping H-2B jobs exist in nearly every state, but the biggest concentrations are in Texas, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado, Georgia and the suburbs around large cities in the Northeast and Midwest. Warmer states have longer seasons, sometimes ten months; northern states compress the same work into six or seven months, which can mean more overtime hours packed into a shorter stay.

Pay and season length

H-2B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage set for the occupation and area by the US Department of Labor. For landscaping labourers in 2026, offers typically fall somewhere around $15 to $20 per hour gross depending on the state, with higher rates in places like Colorado and the Northeast and lower rates in parts of the South. Overtime above 40 hours per week is usually paid at time-and-a-half where required. A typical season runs from March or April until October or November.

The cap problem

The H-2B program has an annual cap of 66,000 visas, split between summer and winter seasons, and demand from employers far exceeds it. Congress and the Department of Homeland Security have released supplemental visas in recent years, many reserved for returning workers. Practically, this means two things for you: employers strongly prefer workers who have held H-2B status before, and timing matters, since spring-start landscaping jobs are the most cap-pressured of all. You can read more about how the program works overall in our guide to H-2B seasonal jobs.

How to stand out as a candidate

Landscaping employers hire in crews, but they still screen individuals. Things that consistently help: previous landscaping, gardening or general outdoor labour experience, even informal; the ability to operate mowers, trimmers or small machinery; a driving licence; basic English for understanding safety instructions; and above all a record of finishing previous contracts. Physical fitness is assumed, so mention specifics instead of adjectives, for example that you have worked full seasons in agriculture or construction before. If you have held any US visa previously and complied with its terms, say so, because a clean immigration history reduces the employer's risk. Many companies also value workers willing to stay until the end of leaf-removal season in November, when some crews thin out.

What a legitimate offer looks like

A real H-2B landscaping employer will give you a written job order stating the wage, hours, location and season dates, and will handle the labour certification and visa petition. Employers must generally cover or reimburse your visa fees and inbound transportation costs. Nobody legitimate will ever charge you a fee for the job offer itself; recruiters who demand payment for access to jobs are a red flag, and paying them can even make you ineligible.
